To say that I "hate" this cemetery is just not so...my rating of only one star (which means "hated it" according to Google) reflects the the condition of the cemetery. To say that it is in poor condition is an understatement. The cemetery was originally established in the late 19th century for Huntington's black population, though it is said that some whites are also buried there as well. But that is irrelevant. To see it, one would not even know that this *is* a cemetery. It is overgrown with weeds and no grave markers can be seen. Access is blocked as the gate at the entrance is chained and locked. I grew up in Huntington and have relatives who live near nearby (Bethel Road). When I was a kid, I used to explore the cemetery. There was some overgrowth, but one could actually walk through it at that time. Yet, even then (35+ years ago), there were sunken graves and headstones lying on the ground. I wish I had a picture to share...the next time I'm in Huntington, I will take a picture to post, as words cannot even express the plight of Bethel Cemetery. It saddens me very much, as it reflects an irreverence to the dead. I wish there was something I could do...
